Ingredients:
• 4 large onions, thinly sliced
• 4 tbsp butter
• 2 cloves garlic, minced
• 4 cups beef broth
• 1 cup dry white wine (optional)
• 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
• 1 tsp dried thyme
• Salt and pepper to taste
• Baguette slices
• Gruyere cheese, grated
Instructions:
1. In a large pot, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and cook, stirring occasionally, until they are caramelized and golden brown, about 30-40 minutes.
2. Stir in the minced garlic and cook for an additional 1-2 minutes.
3. Pour in the beef broth and white wine (if using). Add Worcestershire sauce, dried thyme, salt, and pepper. Bring the soup to a simmer and let it cook for another 15-20 minutes to allow the flavors to meld together.
4. While the soup is simmering, preheat the broiler. Place the baguette slices on a baking sheet and toast them under the broiler until golden brown on both sides.
5. Ladle the hot soup into oven-safe bowls. Top each bowl with a few slices of toasted baguette.
6. Sprinkle a generous amount of grated Gruyere cheese over the baguette slices.
7. Place the bowls under the broiler until the cheese is melted and bubbly, about 2-3 minutes.
8. Carefully remove the bowls from the oven and serve hot. Enjoy your comforting French Onion Soup!
