  Ingredients:

For the pecan mixture:
– 1/2 cup (90g) light or dark brown sugar
– 1/4 cup (60 ml) maple syrup
– 6 tablespoons (90g) unsalted butter, melted
– 1 1/2 cups (190g) chopped pecans

For the apples:
– 2 medium apples, peeled, cored, and thickly sliced
– 4 tablespoons (60g) unsalted butter
– 2 tablespoons brown sugar
– 1/4 cup (60 ml) Whiskey or another liquor of choice

For the French toast:
– 8 large eggs, beaten
– 2 1/2 cups (60 cl) milk
– 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
– 1 teaspoon cinnamon
– 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
– A pinch of salt
– 1 loaf challah bread*, sliced thickly
– Whipped cream, for serving (optional)

  Instructions:

1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9×13 inch (23×33 cm) baking dish with butter.

2. Combine the brown sugar, maple syrup, and melted butter. Pour half of this mixture into the bottom of the prepared baking dish and sprinkle half of the chopped pecans. Set aside.

3. In a large skillet over medium heat, melt the butter. Cook the apple slices until tender for about 5-8 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add the brown sugar and Whiskey, and cook until the alcohol evaporates. Remove from heat and set aside.

4. In a large bowl, whisk together the beaten eggs, milk, vanilla extract, cinnamon, nutmeg, and a pinch of salt.

5. Dip each slice of challah bread into the egg-milk mixture, letting it soak for about a minute to absorb the flavors. Arrange the soaked bread slices in the baking dish. Pour the remaining egg mixture over the bread.

6. Arrange the cooked apple slices over the bread, allowing them to overlap.

7. Add the remaining chopped pecans to the reserved brown sugar-maple mixture from step 2. Spread this mix over the dish evenly.

8. Bake for approximately 45 minutes or until the French toast turns golden and crisp. Let it cool slightly before serving. Serve with a dollop of whipped cream if desired.
